Berkshire Brilliance on Show
What a day to be trackside at Newbury! Saturday's card had everything you could want from an afternoon's racing — quality handicaps, promising novices, and enough talking horses to fill your notebook twice over.
The good ground played fair all day, and with £170,000 in prize money on offer across seven races, the connections turned up mob-handed. This wasn't just your average Saturday card — this was proper racing with proper horses, and it showed from first to last.
The atmosphere was electric from the opening handicap, with punters clearly doing their homework on what looked a cracking Newbury racecard. When you've got the likes of Cieren Fallon, Billy Loughnane, and John Egan all in action, you know you're in for a treat.
Dark Tornado Storms to Glory
The feature 7f handicap was always going to be the race of the day, and Dark Tornado didn't disappoint. John Egan had the 94-rated gelding perfectly positioned throughout, and when he asked the question two furlongs out, the response was emphatic.
This was a horse showing he's got plenty more to give. The way he quickened clear of Darkness and Bobby Bennu suggested the handicapper might have more work to do. Dark Tornado's been knocking on the door in similar company, and this breakthrough win could be the making of him.
The manner of victory was particularly impressive — no panic, no drama, just pure class when it mattered. Egan barely had to get serious, which tells you everything about what's left in the tank.
Billy's Big Day
Billy Loughnane was the jockey to follow all afternoon, and his book of rides read like a who's who of progressive types. The young rider's in red-hot form, and his partnership with several of today's winners shows why he's becoming the go-to man for the big yards.
His ride on Sixtygeesbaby in the 6f handicap was a masterclass in timing. The 82-rated speedster had been threatening a big run, and Loughnane delivered it in style. This horse looks well-handicapped and should follow up quickly if connections strike while the iron's hot.
But it was his handling of Shabab Al Ahli in the mile-and-a-half novice that really caught the eye. The 94-rated colt looked every inch a horse going places, and with that level of ability, he'll be one to follow wherever he pops up next.
Ones to Follow
Sterling Knight ran a blinder in the opening handicap despite not getting home. Cieren Fallon's mount showed bags of pace and will be dangerous dropped back to 7f. The 87-rated gelding is clearly in great heart and looks well-treated at current levels.
Jolivette shaped with real promise in the fillies' novice. David Probert was never hard on her, and the way she stayed on suggests there's a nice handicap in her when she qualifies. One for the notebook, definitely.
The biggest eyecatcher might have been Grilse in the staying novice. Joe Leavy's mount was doing his best work late and looked like he'll appreciate even further. This one screams Ascot or Goodwood material if he continues on this trajectory.
Don't overlook The Joker either. Silvestre De Sousa's ride in the 1m2f handicap suggested there's more to come from this progressive type. The way he traveled through the race before finding traffic suggests he's one to keep onside.
Looking Ahead
Several of today's performers look destined for bigger things. Dark Tornado could easily step up to Listed company if he continues in this vein, while Shabab Al Ahli screams Royal Ascot material.
The handicappers will have been busy with their pens tonight. Sixtygeesbaby and Sterling Knight both look like they'll be racing off higher marks soon, but both showed enough to suggest they can handle the rise.
It's days like this that remind you why Newbury is such a special track. The quality of horse, the standard of racing, and the sheer competitiveness across every race made for compelling viewing from start to finish.
Mark your cards, follow these horses, and get ready for some exciting times ahead. Saturday at Newbury delivered in spades, and the ripple effects will be felt for months to come. Racing doesn't get much better than this!
