A Summer Evening at Plumpton — There Are Worse Ways to Spend a Saturday
My old dad used to say that evening racing in August was the closest thing to a perfect night out that didn't involve a fish supper. I'm inclined to agree. There's something about the low golden light over the South Downs, a pint of something cold in hand, and eight races to get stuck into that makes you feel like the world is, briefly, a very decent place indeed.
Tonight, Plumpton serves up exactly that — a full eight-race card kicking off at 16:18 and running through to what promises to be a lovely summer evening. The going is Good, Good to Firm in places, which is about as fair and honest a surface as you'll find anywhere in the country at this time of year. Horses who handle a quick surface will be at a premium tonight, and those course and distance winners are absolutely worth their weight in gold on a track as quirky as this one. Make sure you've got the full Plumpton racecard in front of you before you have a penny on anything.
The Feature Race: The Marske Fabrications and Engineering Handicap (17:25)
With a £10,000 prize pot and Class 4 status, the Marske Fabrications and Engineering Handicap Stakes over 7f 219y is the standout race on the card this evening. It's also a qualifier for the Straight Mile series, which adds a touch of extra prestige and, crucially, means connections will be sending horses here with genuine purpose rather than just filling a slot.
Ten runners go to post, and what a fascinating mix they are. At the top of the weights, Queen Tamara (3yo, rated 80, Harry Charlton) and Kaleido (4yo, rated 80, David O'Meara) share top billing on the ratings. Queen Tamara is interesting as a lightly-raced three-year-old — that age allowance can be a real weapon in these mixed-age handicaps, and Harry Charlton's yard knows how to place a horse. Keep her firmly on your side.
But the one I keep coming back to is Poet's Dawn. Eleven years old and still at it — you have to love the old warrior. Trained by Tim Easterby and ridden tonight by Duran Fentiman, he carries both the course and distance flags [C, D], which on a track as idiosyncratic as Plumpton tells you he genuinely handles the place. At rated 73 he's got weight in his favour too. Don't write him off just because he's seen more summers than most of the other runners combined.
Rajapour (6yo, rated 79, David O'Meara) also holds course and distance form [C, D] and is partnered by Billy Garritty. O'Meara has two runners in this race, which always makes you think the trainer fancies his chances of landing the spoils one way or another.
Key Runners to Watch Across the Card
Green Bay Dream — 16:18 EBF Novice Stakes
Opening the evening is a twelve-runner novice stakes for two-year-olds over 5f 217y, and with most of the field unraced or unrated, the form book is of limited use. That makes Green Bay Dream — the only runner with an official rating (72) — stand out immediately. Trained by Tim Easterby and ridden by Duran Fentiman, he's clearly the one to beat on known form. Whether the unraced brigade can spring a surprise is the great unknown, but in novice company, a bit of known quality goes a long way. Watch out also for Piper Cee from the K.R. Burke yard — Burke's juveniles are always worth respecting first time out.
Ingleby Archie — 19:30 Market Cross Jewellers Handicap (Div II)
The 19:30 sprint over 5f 217y looks a cracker, and with eleven runners in Division II of the Market Cross Jewellers Handicap, there's plenty to weigh up. Ingleby Archie (5yo, rated 71, Adrian Nicholls) catches the eye immediately — he holds both course and distance form [C, D], which on this tight, turning track is as good a recommendation as any trainer's glowing pre-race quotes. Ridden by Jack Garritty, he's right in the mix.
Hover On The Wind (6yo, rated 73, Paul Midgley) is the top-rated runner with distance form [D] and David Nolan in the saddle. Nolan is one of the most reliable jockeys on the northern circuit and is well worth following when he makes the trip south.
Woodleigh — 18:30 Bakers Tailoring Handicap (Div II)
Over a mile and two furlongs, the Bakers Tailoring Handicap looks competitive, but Woodleigh (5yo, rated 57, Roger Fell) is interesting. Holding both course and distance form [C, D] and partnered by Oisin McSweeney, he's proven he can handle this trip at this track. At the bottom of the weights, he'll be popular in the market — and rightly so. The good to firm ground should suit a horse who has already shown he handles Plumpton well.
Macedonian — 20:00 National Racehorse Week Handicap
The evening closer is a monster field of twenty runners in a Class 6 sprint, and finding the winner in a race like this is more art than science. Connor Beasley takes the ride on Macedonian (4yo, rated 57, Michael Dods), who has distance form [D] to his name. Beasley is a jockey who really knows how to ride a big-field sprint, and Dods' horses tend to show up well in these competitive lower-grade handicaps. At the prices you'd expect in a twenty-runner field, he could be worth a small each-way interest.
How the Going Affects Tonight's Card
Good to firm ground is the great leveller in flat racing — it rewards horses with a clean, efficient action and tends to find out those who need a bit of ease underfoot to produce their best. On a track like Plumpton, where the turns are tight and the camber can catch horses out, a horse that's nimble and balanced will always have an edge over a big, galloping type.
The course and distance winners on tonight's card — Poet's Dawn, Ingleby Archie, Woodleigh, Rajapour — all deserve extra credit for that reason. They've already shown they can handle this specific combination of track and conditions, and on ground that's unlikely to inconvenience them, they're the ones I'd be building my bets around.
Equally, keep an eye on Jason Hart throughout the evening. He rides in several races and is a jockey who consistently delivers on quicker ground — tidy, economical, and rarely makes a mess of things when the chips are down.
Best Bets and Ones to Watch
- Poet's Dawn (17:25) — Course and distance form, Fentiman up, still competitive at 11. Each-way each time.
- Queen Tamara (17:25) — Top-rated three-year-old with the age allowance working in her favour. One to side with.
- Ingleby Archie (19:30) — Course and distance winner in a race that suits. Follow the [C,D] flag.
- Green Bay Dream (16:18) — Only rated runner in the opener. Easterby and Fentiman is a combination worth respecting.
- Macedonian (20:00) — Small each-way interest in the closer with Beasley doing the steering in a wide-open field.
It's shaping up to be a wonderful evening's racing at one of the most characterful tracks in the south of England. Get yourself settled, check the Plumpton racecard one more time, and enjoy every minute of it. The racing starts at 16:18 — don't be late.
