Course Conditions and Overview

Sunday's seven-race card at Sandown Park comes on good to firm, good in places going that will suit the speed merchants. The Esher track is riding faster than we've seen it for weeks, and that's going to put a premium on early pace and tactical positioning.

I walked the course this morning and the ground has genuine spring in it. We're looking at times that could be a second or two quicker than standard, which always makes for compelling viewing around Sandown's undulating terrain. The feature handicap chase over two miles six furlongs should provide the highlight, with several course specialists in the mix.

Feature Race Analysis: The Ladies Day Handicap Chase (5:05pm)

The £8,700 prize money makes this the day's feature, and it's assembled a field where any of six could feasibly win. King Roly tops the weights on 122, but Mickey Bowen's seven-year-old has course form that reads well for today's conditions.

Jubilant sits on the same mark and brings solid chase form to the table. James Owen's gelding has been knocking on the door in similar company, though he's yet to prove himself a course specialist like some of his rivals.

The one that catches my eye is Tapley. Suzy Smith's nine-year-old drops in class here and has both course and distance form in the book. At 120, he's well-handicapped if returning to his best. Sean Bowen takes the ride on Okavango Delta, who could be the each-way value at a bigger price.

Ground Impact on the Feature

This quicker surface will suit the prominent racers. King Roly has shown his best form when allowed to bowl along in front, and today's conditions should play to that strength. Tapley, meanwhile, has won on similar ground before and could find the extra gear that's been missing on softer surfaces recently.

Novice Hurdle Opener: Unrated Puzzle

The opening novices' hurdle at 2:35pm presents the usual challenge of unrated runners, but there are clues to follow. Ka Mate du Brivet brings French form to Warren Greatrex's yard, and the trainer knows how to place his runners.

Gavin Sheehan partners Our Guide for Jamie Snowden, a combination that's been in good form lately. The extended two miles six should suit most of these, but watch for any market moves that might hint at home gallop form.

The Bowen family team of Mickey, Sean Bowen, and James Bowen have strong chances throughout the card. Shuil Rocco represents them here and could be overpriced if the market underestimates the stable's current form.

Mares' Contests Provide Value Opportunities

Both mares' races look competitive affairs where the form book provides solid guidance. In the 3:35pm mares' hurdle over three miles two furlongs, All Inn Hand and I Am The Moon are closely matched on ratings but bring different profiles.

All Inn Hand has course form and handles this trip well, while I Am The Moon represents the in-form Twiston-Davies stable. The extended trip on quicker ground could favor stamina over speed, making this a fascinating tactical battle.

The mares' chase at 4:05pm sees Pure Seduction as the class act on ratings. Fergal O'Brien's mare has been consistent in similar company and the Queen Boudicca Series qualifier status adds extra incentive for connections to have her spot-on.

Handicap Hurdle Tactics

The 4:35pm handicap hurdle could develop into a sprint finish given the quick ground. Frank Stamper is unexposed over this trip for Warren Greatrex, while Reteti brings solid recent form to the table. James Bowen choosing Frank Stamper over other stable options suggests confidence.

Ones to Watch

My three to follow today start with King Roly in the feature. The ground and trip are ideal, and Mickey Bowen's stable is hitting form at the right time. He's worth backing each-way despite the weight.

Tapley in the same race offers better value. The course and distance winner drops in class and should appreciate the quicker surface. Isabelle Ryder's 5lb claim is a bonus.

Finally, Frank Stamper in the handicap hurdle looks unexposed and could be well-treated off his current mark. Warren Greatrex's four-year-old has scope for improvement over this longer trip.

The ground will ride fast today, so expect tactical races where positioning matters more than usual. Those drawn to race prominently should have a distinct advantage, particularly in the longer distance events where the pace can become strung out on Sandown's testing terrain.
