Sunday at Sandown: What to Expect

There's something quietly special about summer jumping at Sandown Park. The crowds are thinner than the Festival days, the atmosphere is more relaxed, and the horses — well, some of them are very much meant to be here. Seven races on the Sandown Park racecard this afternoon, and with the going riding Good to Firm, we're firmly in fast-ground territory. That matters enormously over jumps. Horses that want cut in the ground will be found out quickly, and those with a proven record on a sound surface move to the top of the shortlist before we've even looked at the form.

Sandown's jumping track is no pushover. The railway fences down the back can catch the unwary, and the run-in from the last is long enough to expose any horse that's idling. Stamina and jumping accuracy count here, even in the summer. Keep that in mind as we work through the card.

Feature Race: The Silver Fox Classic Handicap Chase (15:58)

The standout race of the day is the Silver Fox Classic Handicap Steeple Chase at 15:58 — a Class 2 contest worth £24,000 over 2m 213y, and the one race on the card where the form is deep enough to have a proper debate.

Captain Cool (rated 126, Luke Scott, Jennie Candlish) is the one I keep coming back to. Course and distance form is the bedrock of any selection on a tight-turning track like this, and Captain Cool holds both the course and distance flag [C,D]. He's six years old — still on the way up — and Candlish has him in excellent nick this summer. Good to Firm is no concern; he's shown he handles a quick surface without any fuss. At 126 he's not the top weight, but he's well within his comfort zone off this mark.

Centara (rated 132, Freddie Gingell, Paul Nicholls) heads the weights and commands respect on ratings alone. Nicholls doesn't run horses in the summer for fun — when they travel to Sandown in July, they're ready. Gingell has been riding with real confidence lately and 132 is a big number, but if Centara handles the Good to Firm, he's the one they all have to beat. The concern is whether he's as effective on this faster ground as he is with a bit more give.

Breaking Cover (rated 130, Sam Twiston-Davies, Anthony Honeyball) is another live contender. Sam Twiston-Davies knows this track inside out and Honeyball's horses tend to run their race. He's just 2lb below Centara on the ratings and if the weights work out in the race, he could be the value play at a bigger price.

In The Air (rated 123, Ciaran Gethings, Alastair Ralph) and Sir Tivo (rated 122, Sean Bowen, Gary Hanmer) both hold course and distance form [C,D], which is significant. Sir Tivo is 12 years old and you have to be realistic — he's not going to beat a fresh, well-handicapped six-year-old at his peak. But he knows every blade of grass at Sandown and Bowen won't be riding him without a reason.

Selection: Captain Cool — course and distance form, progressive profile, right age, right ground.

Key Runners to Watch Across the Card

13:45 — Novices' Hurdle: Skelton's Double-Handed Threat

Dan Skelton saddles two in the opener and the man rarely sends a runner to Sandown without it being fit to run well. Loriko (rated 121, Miss Heidi Palin) is the higher-rated of the pair and a five-year-old with room to improve. Heidi Palin has been making a real name for herself and she'll give Loriko every chance. His stablemate Edelak (rated 118, Harry Atkins) holds the course and distance flag [C,D] — that's a meaningful edge in a five-runner field. Atkins is a capable claimer who won't panic on the front end. Between the two Skelton runners, Edelak's track knowledge gives him the slight edge, though Loriko's superior rating makes this a genuine puzzle.

Obsessedwithyou (rated 115, Gavin Sheehan, Jamie Snowden) also holds distance form [D] and Sheehan is a jockey I'd back to ride a patient race. Worth a each-way look at a price.

The unrated runners — He's Tailor Made (Rian Corcoran, Adrian Wintle) and Angel of My Dreams (Nick Slatter, Killahena & McPherson) — are unknown quantities. With no official mark to anchor them, they're hard to assess, but don't dismiss He's Tailor Made entirely if there's market support in the morning.

15:23 — Handicap Hurdle: Campaign Trail the Logical Pick

The Patrick's 60th Celebration Handicap Hurdle over 2m 6f looks straightforward on paper. Campaign Trail (rated 117, Tom Bellamy, Kim Bailey & Mat Nicholls) is the class horse in the field and Bellamy is a jockey who gets the best out of horses over this sort of trip. The Good to Firm ground is a consideration over 2m 6f — you need a horse that travels well and doesn't burn energy — but Campaign Trail's rating advantage is significant enough that he should cope.

Lion of The Desert (rated 110, Joe Anderson, Grace Harris) holds course and distance form [C,D] and is worth noting each-way at a bigger price. Harris has a small but well-organised yard and course-savvy horses at Sandown are always worth respecting.

16:33 — Staying Hurdle: Artiste d'Ainay in Small Field

Only four runners in the PJ McGeever Handicap Hurdle over 3m 2f, and the longer trip over Good to Firm ground will stretch stamina to the limit. Artiste d'Ainay (rated 98, James Bowen, Billy Aprahamian) is top-rated and holds course form [C]. In a race this small, ratings often dominate. The bigger danger is East Eagle (rated 87, Charlie Maggs, Mike Sowersby) who holds both course and distance form [C,D] — at 3m 2f on fast ground, track knowledge is priceless.

How the Going Affects Today's Selections

Good to Firm in July at Sandown is exactly what it sounds like — quick, unforgiving ground that rewards horses with a clean action and efficient jumping. Over fences especially, any horse that pecks or sprawls at a jump is going to lose significant momentum on this surface. Stamina horses that rely on soft ground to grind out a result will struggle badly today.

The horses I've highlighted — Captain Cool, Edelak, Campaign Trail — all have profiles suggesting they handle a sound surface. Course and distance form [C,D] in these conditions is doubly valuable: it tells you the horse has already handled this specific combination of track and going, which is as close to a guaranteed fit as you'll get in racing.

If you're looking for each-way value, lean towards the course-and-distance horses in the handicaps rather than the top weights who might be meeting the ground for the first time at this level.

Best Bets & Ones to Watch

  • Best Bet: Captain Cool (15:58) — Course and distance form, progressive six-year-old, handles Good to Firm. The Silver Fox Classic is his race to lose.
  • Each-Way: Edelak (13:45) — Course and distance winner for a powerful yard. Skelton's runners at Sandown in summer deserve maximum respect.
  • Each-Way: Lion of The Desert (15:23) — Course and distance form [C,D] at a likely bigger price than Campaign Trail. The value option in the 15:23.
  • One to Watch: East Eagle (16:33) — Small field, long trip, course and distance form. If Artiste d'Ainay has any doubt about the ground, East Eagle swoops.
  • Saver: Breaking Cover (15:58) — If Captain Cool is short in the market, Breaking Cover at 130 with Sam Twiston-Davies is the obvious alternative in the feature.

Seven races, fast ground, and a feature chase worth £24,000. There's plenty to enjoy at Sandown this Sunday afternoon. Check the full Sandown Park racecard for latest declarations and market moves before you commit. Good luck out there.
