The Stage Is Set: Why the Jersey Stakes Matters
Royal Ascot. Just the name sends a shiver down the spine. And as the famous meeting hurtles towards its climax on that glorious Saturday, the Jersey Stakes at 16:20 stands tall as one of the most fiercely contested seven-furlong battles of the entire Flat season.
This is a race that has a habit of throwing up tomorrow's stars. A Group 3 prize worth £175,000, restricted to three-year-olds, it draws together the sharpest, most progressive milers and seven-furlong specialists in training. Some are here because the Guineas door has closed. Others are here because this trip — seven furlongs on a sun-baked Ascot straight — is absolutely their optimum. All of them want it badly.
With 17 declared runners (one non-runner in Billecart), a goingstick reading of 9 on the Stands side and a stellar jockey roster that reads like a who's who of the weighing room, this is shaping up to be an absolute blockbuster. Buckle up.
Top Contenders: Who Holds the Aces?
Morris Dancer (No. 10) — John & Thady Gosden / Benoit de la Sayette
Morris Dancer arrives as the highest-rated runner in the field at 110, and the Gosden operation rarely saddle a horse at Royal Ascot without serious intent. A proven distance winner, he's drawn in stall 8 — almost bang in the middle of the track — which is about as good as it gets on a day when the Stands rail is where you want to be. Benoit de la Sayette has been in sparkling form and will know exactly how to deploy this colt's considerable engine. The horse to beat, plain and simple.
The Prettiest Star (No. 17) — Ed Walker / James Doyle
Don't let the gender discount fool you. The Prettiest Star carries a rating of 109 and Ed Walker has sent her to Ascot in the form of her life. James Doyle — one of the most underrated big-race jockeys in Britain — takes the ride, and this filly has the class to make the colts look very ordinary indeed. She's drawn in stall 10, which keeps her nicely positioned without being out on a limb. A genuine, genuine danger.
Thesecretadversary (No. 2) — J. A. Stack / Seamie Heffernan
A rating of 108 and Seamie Heffernan in the saddle — this is a combination that demands respect. Trained by J. A. Stack, Thesecretadversary has the profile of a horse who has been quietly campaigned with a race exactly like this in mind. Drawn in stall 2, he'll get cover early and Heffernan will be looking to pounce late. Don't be surprised if this one sneaks into the conversation at a tasty price.
America Queen (No. 14) — Richard Hughes / Billy Loughnane
Another filly carrying a 108 rating, America Queen represents Richard Hughes in terrific form and Billy Loughnane — one of the most exciting young riders in the sport — gets the call. Drawn in stall 5, she's well positioned to race prominently on the Stands side. Hughes trains his horses to peak at the right moment, and this looks very much like her moment. A fascinating each-way proposition.
Saber Strike (No. 12) — William Haggas / Tom Marquand
Saber Strike is a proven seven-furlong winner with a rating of 108, and William Haggas is a trainer who knows exactly how to prepare a horse for the big occasion. Tom Marquand is ice-cool under pressure and stall 9 puts him right in the heart of the action. If the pace is strong — and with 16 runners it should be — Saber Strike could be finishing fastest of all. Very much one to watch.
Neolithic (No. 11) — Aidan O'Brien / Ryan Moore
Aidan O'Brien saddles two in this race, and while Dorset carries the higher weight, it's Neolithic who gets the nod from Ryan Moore — and that tells you everything you need to know about stable confidence. The blinkers go on (headgear: B), suggesting connections want to sharpen his focus, and Moore from stall 7 will have him perfectly placed. A rating of 107 might underestimate what this colt is capable of on fast ground.
Going and Draw: The Conditions Conversation
The going is Good to Firm, with the goingstick sitting at 9 on the Stands side — that's quick. Very quick. This is a track that rewards horses with a high cruising speed and the ability to quicken off a strong gallop. Stamina is not the issue; pure, electric pace is.
In a field this large over Ascot's straight seven furlongs, the draw matters enormously. Historically, low-to-mid draws have a strong record here, particularly when the ground is fast and the Stands rail is the place to be. Stalls 1 through 10 look advantageous, and it's notable that Morris Dancer (8), The Prettiest Star (10), Neolithic (7) and Saber Strike (9) are all beautifully positioned.
Horses drawn in the high teens — like Into The Sky in stall 17 and Avicenna in stall 16 — will need to work harder to get into a winning position, though Oisin Murphy on Into The Sky is the kind of rider who can make a high draw irrelevant through sheer tactical brilliance.
Value Picks and Dangers Lurking in the Pack
If you're looking for each-way value, the market may not fully account for Catullus (No. 7, William Buick, Charlie Appleby). A distance winner drawn in stall 14 is far from ideal, but Appleby and Buick rarely turn up at Royal Ascot without a serious horse. At a bigger price, he could be the one to sneak into the places.
Green Sense (No. 16, James McDonald, Joseph Patrick O'Brien) is another filly who deserves more than a passing glance. McDonald is a world-class jockey who makes everything look effortless, and J. P. O'Brien has been sending horses to Ascot in top form. Drawn in stall 3, she gets a lovely position to race from.
- Colori Forever — a course AND distance winner. Stall 13 is a concern, but course form counts for everything at Ascot.
- Into The Sky — Oisin Murphy can do things other jockeys can't. High draw is the only worry.
- Ardisia — Colin Keane is a master tactician and Hugo Palmer has this gelding in good order.
Our Selection: The Jersey Stakes Tip
There's one horse in this field who combines the highest rating, a perfect draw, proven form at the distance, and the backing of one of the shrewdest training operations in Britain. That horse is Morris Dancer.
John and Thady Gosden have assembled a formidable record at Royal Ascot, and when they send a horse out with a 110 rating and Benoit de la Sayette in the saddle, you take notice. Stall 8 is almost tailor-made for this race, the ground will suit, and the seven-furlong trip is exactly where this colt thrives.
Our tip: Morris Dancer (EW). For each-way value, America Queen at a bigger price looks the most compelling alternative — Richard Hughes has her primed and Billy Loughnane is riding the race of his young career right now.

Who is the Favourite for the Jersey Stakes 2026?
Morris Dancer, trained by John & Thady Gosden and ridden by Benoit de la Sayette, is expected to head the market as the top-rated runner in the field at 110. The Prettiest Star (109) and Thesecretadversary (108) are likely to be prominent in the betting as well. Always check live odds with your bookmaker before placing, as markets can shift significantly on the morning of the race.
Does the Draw Matter in the Jersey Stakes at Ascot?
Absolutely — and significantly so. Over Ascot's straight seven furlongs on Good to Firm ground, the Stands rail is the premium position. Low-to-mid draws (roughly stalls 1-10) have a strong historical record in this race, and with the goingstick sitting at 9, that advantage is amplified. Horses in stalls 14 and above will need either exceptional tactical riding or a truly strong pace to overcome the disadvantage.
Which Jockeys Should I Watch in the 2026 Jersey Stakes?
The jockey roster for this race is genuinely exceptional. Ryan Moore on Neolithic, William Buick on Catullus, Oisin Murphy on Into The Sky and James Doyle on The Prettiest Star are all worth tracking. Among the younger generation, Billy Loughnane on America Queen and Dylan Browne McMonagle on Andab could make the headlines. W. M. Lordan also rides for the powerful Aidan O'Brien stable aboard Dorset and shouldn't be dismissed. Meanwhile, Ray Dawson on Avicenna represents excellent value if the outsider fires.
