Bank Holiday Brilliance at Wincanton
What a way to spend a Bank Holiday Monday! Wincanton served up a proper feast of flat racing that had punters glued to their screens and trackside crowds buzzing with excitement. Seven races of genuine quality, topped off by a Windsor Sprint Series qualifier that lived up to every expectation.
The good to firm going played perfectly into the hands of the speedsters, while the longer trips provided tactical masterclasses that reminded us why flat racing on the turn can be just as thrilling as anything the jumps season serves up.
Sprint Series Showdown Steals the Show
The feature race – that Class 2 Windsor Sprint Series qualifier worth £30,000 – was always going to be the main event, and boy did it deliver! With Kylian heading the weights off a mark of 99, this was no gimme for Edward Greatrex's charge.
Tom Marquand aboard Trefor looked the danger on paper. Rated 96 and proven course and distance winner, this one's been knocking on the door of a big handicap prize all season. The way Marquand has been riding lately, you'd back him to get a tune out of a shopping trolley!
But don't sleep on Desert Cop for Neil Callan. Rated 89 might look modest in this company, but this sprinter's got that turn of foot that can catch the big guns napping. Course and distance winner too – never underestimate local knowledge at a track like Wincanton.
Maiden Battles Provide Future Stars
The two maiden contests on the Wincanton racecard were absolute gold mines for spotting future winners. That Class 4 sprint maiden had Silvestre De Sousa partnering Percy's Star – when the Brazilian wizard rocks up for a maiden, you sit up and take notice.
But the real eye-catcher was Space Party with Tom Marquand in the plate. This one's been working like a dream at home according to stable whispers, and Marquand doesn't waste his time on no-hopers. Mark this one down as a serious future prospect.
The longer maiden told a different story entirely. Mythical Valentine carries a hefty rating of 77 into a maiden – that screams expensive purchase with bags of ability. Callum Hutchinson takes the ride, and this combination could be explosive if the penny drops.
Handicap Heroics and Future Winners
Those three handicaps in the middle of the card were where the real punting gold was hiding. Auld Toon Loon in the Class 3 contest looked absolutely primed for a big run. Rated 97 and a course and distance winner, Pierre-Louis Jamin knows exactly what buttons to press on this one.
Serengeti for Rob Hornby was another that caught the eye. This horse has been running some cracking races in defeat lately, and that rating of 95 might just be workable if the handicapper's been a touch generous.
The finale – that 14-runner cavalry charge – was always going to be a punter's nightmare and a spectacle to behold. Sunshine And Roses and Fans Favourite both off 59 looked the most obvious contenders, but in a field this size, anything could happen.
Ones to Follow and Future Targets
Coming away from today's action, there are several horses that deserve a place on the shortlist for future investments. Space Party from the sprint maiden is the standout – if this one doesn't win next time out, I'll eat my binoculars.
Trefor, whether he won or lost today's feature, has to be respected moving forward. Tom Marquand's booking tells you everything about the stable's confidence, and these Windsor Sprint Series qualifiers often produce horses that go on to bigger and better things.
From the handicap ranks, keep a close eye on Desert Cop. That rating of 89 could prove very workable if connections can find the right race. Neil Callan's riding has been in top form lately, and this partnership could strike gold in the coming weeks.
Greek Order in the Class 3 handicap is another for the notebook. Rated 92 and course and distance proven, Hector Crouch's mount has the profile of a horse that could clean up in similar company.
Looking Ahead
Today's Wincanton card proved once again that Bank Holiday racing doesn't have to mean second-rate action. The quality on show, from the Windsor Sprint Series qualifier down to the most modest handicap, reminded us why flat racing's summer campaign is so eagerly anticipated.
Several of today's runners will undoubtedly pop up at bigger meetings in the coming weeks. The sprint division looks particularly strong, and don't be surprised to see some of these names appearing at Royal Ascot or Glorious Goodwood if connections are feeling ambitious.
For those who backed the right horses today, well played. For those who didn't, don't worry – racing like this comes around again soon enough. That's the beauty of this game – there's always another day, another card, another chance to find that elusive winner.
