Friday Night Under the Lights

Right then, Friday the 13th at Windsor and I'm not superstitious – much. Nine races under the floodlights with the track freshly harrowed and sitting on that reliable standard going. Perfect for an evening's entertainment, and with prize money ranging from £6k to £15k, there's proper competitive action throughout the card.

The course team got busy yesterday with a 5-inch harrow and gallop master finish, so we're looking at an even surface that should suit all running styles. No surprises, no excuses – just good old-fashioned racing on a track that rewards honest endeavour.

Feature Race Focus

The 4:25 Midnite Handicap Stakes is our feature contest – a Class 3 affair over the extended mile-and-six that's Windsor's signature trip. £15,200 to the winner and only five runners, which means we're in for a tactical affair.

Charging Thunder tops the weights on 95 and brings course-and-distance form to the party. The eight-year-old has been there, done it, bought the t-shirt at this track. Mason Paetel takes the ride for James Owen, and while the horse isn't getting any younger, class is permanent.

Brasil Power drops down from higher grades for George Boughey with Billy Loughnane doing the steering. Rated 93, he's got course form and the booking of Loughnane suggests connections fancy their chances. Sometimes a step back in class is exactly what a horse needs to find their mojo again.

The danger could be Charlie's Choice at the foot of the weights. Rated just 80, he's getting lumps of weight from the principals and David Simcock's horses have been running well lately. Jack Dace gets the leg-up and at the prices, he could be the each-way steal.

Novice Intrigue in the Opener

The 3:45 Restricted Novice Stakes kicks us off with six runners who've yet to trouble the ratings compiler. These Band B, C and D horses are the honest battlers of the game, and there's always a story to be found.

Golden Muse catches the eye immediately – not just because Hollie Doyle is in the saddle, but because Marco Botti's three-year-old filly represents a yard that knows how to place their horses. When Doyle rocks up for a novice stakes, you sit up and take notice.

Battle Hymn for David Simcock gets Sean Dylan Bowen, another booking that suggests there's ability lurking. Simcock's been having a steady season and deserves a winner – this three-year-old could be the one to provide it.

Handicap Highlights

The 5:40 BetMGM Golden Goals Handicap brings together eleven three-year-olds over the minimum trip, and it's a proper cavalry charge waiting to happen. Angel Numbers heads the market for good reason – Hollie Doyle again, distance form, and a rating of 75 that suggests there's more to come.

Guernsey Angel has Rossa Ryan aboard and course-and-distance form in the book. David Evans' runner has been consistent without winning, but sometimes that breakthrough comes when you least expect it. The booking of Ryan suggests the penny might be about to drop.

Later in the evening, the 6:10 handicap over a mile looks wide open. Sir Paul Ramsey is interesting for Charlie Johnston – the four-year-old has distance form and Jack Callan's 3lb claim could be crucial in a tight finish.

Jockey Watch

Speaking of jockeys, this card is a proper showcase of talent. Hollie Doyle has three rides and you can bet she's not here for the scenery. Rossa Ryan, Billy Loughnane, and Tom Marquand all have multiple mounts, suggesting the big yards fancy their chances across several races.

Grace McEntee has a couple of interesting rides, including Probation in the opener for Kevin Philippart de Foy. The 7lb claim could be telling in competitive handicaps, and McEntee's been riding with plenty of confidence lately.

James Sullivan partners Filly Eilish in the opener and Bad Habits in the finale – both for trainers who know how to get their horses ready for the big day.

Best Bets and Ones to Watch

Right, cards on the table time. Golden Muse in the opener gets the nod – Doyle, Botti, and a three-year-old filly who should have improvement to come. At the prices, she's the one to be on.

In the feature race, Charlie's Choice each-way looks the value play. Getting weight from better-rated rivals and representing a yard in good form – sometimes the outsider is the insider.

For a punt at bigger odds, Guernsey Angel in the 5:40 could be the one to catch them napping. Course winner, top jockey, and a trainer who's been patient with his horses.

Friday night racing at Windsor – nine chances to get it right, or spectacularly wrong. Either way, it beats staying in watching the telly. See you in the winner's enclosure – or drowning our sorrows at the bar.
