A Grand Day Out in East Yorkshire

My late father-in-law used to say that Beverley was the kind of racecourse that reminded you why you fell in love with the sport in the first place. Not the glamour of Royal Ascot, not the big-money drama of Newmarket — just proper racing, proper people, and a proper view across the Yorkshire Wolds. He wasn't wrong. I've had some of my happiest afternoons at Beverley, and I suspect today will add a few more memories to the collection.

We've got six races on the Beverley racecard this Tuesday afternoon, kicking off at 14:45 and running through to 17:15. The going is described as Good, which is about as ideal as it gets for a summer afternoon's flat racing. Beverley's undulating track can catch horses out at the best of times, but on a sound surface like this, you'd expect genuine form horses to come to the fore. No excuses for anyone today — the ground is fair, the sun is (hopefully) out, and we're in for a treat.

The Feature Race: EBF Fillies' Novice Stakes (15:15)

In terms of class and prize money, the National Racehorse Week 2026 EBF Fillies' Novice Stakes at 15:15 stands out as the headline act. It's a Class 3 contest over 6f 195y for two-year-old fillies, with £13,000 in the pot and GBB Race status attached — meaning breeders of qualifying runners can pick up a bonus. Small field of five, but quality matters more than quantity here.

Rogue Passion is the one they all have to beat. Trained by Edward Bethell and ridden by the in-form Oisin Orr, she arrives rated 83 — a significant advantage over her unraced rivals. She's already shown she belongs at this level, and on Good ground over a trip that should suit, she looks the most likely winner on paper. Bethell has been having a fine season, and Orr doesn't need much of an invitation to deliver on a well-fancied filly.

That said, K. R. Burke saddles two of the unraced runners — Girl Scout and Shaqra Queen — and Burke's juveniles are always worth a second look when they debut. He doesn't run them to make up the numbers. Lizzie Bennet, trained by Kevin Ryan and ridden by Tom Eaves, is another who could outrun her novice status. Ryan knows this track well and his two-year-olds tend to be ready when they show up.

Key Runners to Watch Across the Card

Hostility — 14:45 Apprentice Handicap

The opening race is the Cummersdale Apprentice Handicap over 7f 173y, and it's a lovely contest to get the afternoon started. Conor Whiteley takes the ride on Hostility for David O'Meara, and this four-year-old carries the crucial course and distance form — marked up with both a [C] and [D] in the racecard. Top-rated in the field at 65, Hostility has clearly shown he handles this track and this trip before, and on Good ground that shouldn't change. O'Meara's horses tend to run their race, and Whiteley is an apprentice who rides with more confidence than his claim might suggest. He's one to be on side with.

Bay Dream Believer — 14:45 Apprentice Handicap

Kyle McHugh partners Bay Dream Believer for Mark Walford, and this seven-year-old veteran knows his way around Beverley — he's a course and distance winner [D]. At rated 64, he's just a pound below Hostility, and his experience in apprentice company shouldn't be underestimated. Seven-year-olds don't keep running unless they're still enjoying it, and a horse who's won over this distance before deserves respect on Good going.

Stirrup Cup — 16:15 Handicap Stakes

The Christmas Community Raceday Handicap at 16:15 over 5f 182y has nine runners and a fascinating look to it. Stirrup Cup, trained by Tim Easterby and ridden by Duran Fentiman, holds both course and distance form [C,D] and is joint top-rated on 73. Easterby knows Beverley inside out — it's practically his home track — and when he sends a horse with proven form at the venue, you take notice. On Good ground over a sprint trip, Stirrup Cup looks the one to be on.

Talismans Time — 16:45 Handicap Stakes

The Ladies Night Handicap at 16:45 is the longest race of the day at 1m 6f 32y, and it's a Class 4 GBBPlus contest worth £10,500. Talismans Time, trained by Edward Bethell and ridden by Cian Horgan, is the top-rated runner on 81 and looks a serious contender. Bethell, as mentioned in the feature race, is in fine form this season. A staying trip on Good ground should bring out the best in this four-year-old, and Horgan is a capable partner who's been picking up some decent spare rides of late.

Tees George — 14:45 Apprentice Handicap

Don't overlook Tees George in the opener, ridden by Oliver Carmichael for Adrian Nicholls. Rated 60 and without the course and distance badge, he might look like an each-way outsider — and in truth, he probably is — but Carmichael is a tidy rider and Nicholls keeps his horses fit and ready. Sometimes in these apprentice races, it's the lightly-fancied runner with a fresh pair of legs who nicks it. Worth a small interest at the prices.

How the Good Going Shapes Things

Good ground at Beverley in August is a blessing. The track's natural undulations mean that horses who struggle in soft conditions often find their feet again when the surface is true. Crucially, today's going rewards horses with genuine ability rather than those who simply grind through mud — so the form book becomes more reliable, and course-and-distance winners become even more significant.

For the sprints — the 15:45 nursery over 5f and the 16:15 handicap over 5f 182y — expect sharp, well-balanced horses to excel. Cara Tuke rides Izzari in the opener, and while she's not the flashiest name on the card, Tuke has been developing nicely as a rider and Izzari's distance form [D] gives her a fighting chance. In the staying race at 16:45, Good ground means the pace will be genuine from the off, which suits horses who travel well through a race rather than those who need things to fall apart in front of them.
