A Warm Welsh Welcome
My late father-in-law had a saying about Welsh racecourses: "If it's not raining, something's wrong." Well, he'd have been thoroughly confused today. Ffos Las is basking in proper June sunshine, the going has dried out considerably from its earlier state, and we've got six races of summer flat racing to look forward to on a genuinely lovely Tuesday afternoon in Carmarthenshire. Sometimes this sport just hands you a gift.
The Ffos Las track — tucked away in Trimsaran and still feeling like one of racing's best-kept secrets despite being well over a decade old — is an absolute pleasure on a day like this. The Good going is key to everything we discuss below, so keep it in mind. With the sun beating down and the ground continuing to dry, anything with a preference for a sounder surface is going to be worth a second look. Check the full Ffos Las racecard before you have a penny on anything, and let's get into it.
The Feature Race: Vibe Recruit Maiden Stakes (15:30)
The richest prize on the card at £10,000 is the Vibe Recruit Maiden Stakes over 7 furlongs and 80 yards, and it's a GBB Race to boot — meaning breeders of British-breds get a bonus if their horse wins. Nine runners, a mix of unexposed three-year-olds and a couple of older maidens who've been around the block, and genuinely tricky to call. But that's half the fun, isn't it?
The one I keep coming back to is English Time, the three-year-old from Harry Charlton's yard. He's the only runner in the field with an official rating — 80 — which tells you the handicapper has seen enough to form a view, and that view is broadly positive. Lewis Edmunds takes the ride, and the combination of a capable handler, a solid rating, and what should be a suitable trip makes him the one to beat. Charlton horses tend to arrive ready, and on Good ground, English Time ought to be travelling well turning in.
Keep an eye on Wid for Ralph Beckett, with Rossa Ryan in the saddle. Beckett is a trainer who knows how to place a horse, and Ryan is in fine form. Unrated, yes — but Beckett doesn't send horses to Ffos Las on a Tuesday without a reason. West Byfleet for Jack Channon, ridden by Billy Loughnane, is another worth keeping onside. Loughnane is having a tremendous season and his booking here is encouraging.
Key Runners to Watch Across the Card
On Edge — 14:30 (South Wales Medical Event Cover Handicap)
The opening six-furlong handicap is a competitive enough affair for Class 5, and the horse that catches my eye is On Edge, the eight-year-old trained by Christopher Mason and ridden by Billy Loughnane. That [D] flag tells you he's won over this distance before, he's rated 75 which puts him joint-top of the weights, and Loughnane doesn't take a ride at a midweek meeting without thinking he's got a chance. At his age, On Edge will have done this many times before — he's an old hand, and old hands tend to know their way around on a sunny afternoon.
Hierarchy is another 75-rated course-and-distance winner in the race, handled by Jamie Osborne and ridden by William Carver. Two course-and-distance winners at the top of the ratings in a seven-runner field — this race could go either way between them, and the ground suiting both won't separate them on that basis alone. Loughnane's claim on On Edge just edges it for me.
Isle of Lismore — 15:00 (Connolly's Red Mills Confined Handicap)
The 15:00 is restricted to horses who haven't won in 2026, which always creates an interesting dynamic. Nobody in this field has found the winner's enclosure this year, which means confidence might be fragile — but it also means the form lines are relatively level. Isle of Lismore, the eight-year-old for Robert Cowell and Billy Loughnane, has course-and-distance form and is rated highest in the field at 68. He's been around long enough to know what he's doing, and Loughnane picking up a second ride in consecutive races suggests connections are serious. Arabian Cobra for Adrian Wintle is the top-rated horse at 72 and worth respecting, but the [D] flag on Isle of Lismore is hard to ignore on this track.
Zambezi Magic — 17:10 (Zambezi Magic Handicap)
There's something rather charming about a race named after one of its own runners, and Zambezi Magic — the nine-year-old for Bernard Llewellyn — carries both a [C] and a [D] flag, meaning he's won at this course and over this distance. He's a local legend of sorts, and the crowd will be rooting for him. At rated 62 he's not the highest in the field, but Abando (rated 70, Jamie Osborne) and Solanna (rated 68, Billy Loughnane, course-and-distance winner) look the more serious threats. Solanna is the one I'd side with — Loughnane again, a proven course record, and a trainer in John Butler who knows his way around a smaller track.
How the Going Affects Things
This is important, so don't skip past it. The going was softer earlier and has been drying throughout the day. By the time the first race goes off at 14:30, we're on Good ground, and it may well continue to firm up as the afternoon wears on. That matters for a few reasons.
- Horses with course-and-distance form at Ffos Las will have experienced varying ground here — check whether their wins came on similar going.
- Older horses who prefer cut in the ground — anything that thrives on Soft or Heavy — may find today's conditions less to their liking.
- The later races, particularly the 16:35 and 17:10, could be run on ground that's firmed up further, so keep an eye on any going updates before you commit.
- Three-year-olds in the maiden (15:30) may be less affected by going preferences simply because their form books are thinner — fitness and ability will count for more.
Christian Howarth rides Grey Horizon in the opener and Prophet Squeeze in the maiden — he's a jockey worth following on a card like this, quietly picking up decent spare rides and making the most of them.
Roger's Best Bets: Ones to Watch
Right then, let's bring it all together. I'm not going to pretend I've got a crystal ball — nobody in this game has — but here's where I'd be putting my interest today:
- Best Bet: English Time (15:30) — Top-rated, well-trained, good ground suits, and Lewis Edmunds is a capable partner. The standout selection of the day.
- Each-Way: Solanna (17:10) — Course-and-distance winner, Billy Loughnane up, and the form of older horses over a mile and two on Good ground at Ffos Las is usually reliable.
- Saver: On Edge (14:30) — Eight years old and still rated 75. He's done it here before, and Loughnane's booking gives him an extra tick.
- One to Watch: Wid (15:30) — Unrated but Beckett and Ryan is a combination that tends to mean business. If the price is big enough, he's worth a small interest.
It's a lovely afternoon's racing, and Ffos Las on a sunny Tuesday is one of those days that reminds you why you fell in love with this sport in the first place. Enjoy it — and good luck to all of you having a go. See you in the winner's enclosure.
