Course Conditions Set Fair for Sunday Sport
Sunday's seven-race card at Ffos Las looks perfectly set up on good to soft, good in places going. That soil moisture reading of 54 tells you everything - we're bang in the sweet spot where most horses can show their true form without the ground being a significant factor either way.
I've walked this track in similar conditions plenty of times, and it rides fair throughout the afternoon. The Welsh venue has matured nicely since opening, and these conditions should see the best horse win in most races rather than ground specialists getting an unfair advantage.
Feature Race: Mares' Handicap Hurdle the Pick of the Card
The £8,700 Mercedes-Benz of Chichester Mares' Handicap Hurdle (3:45pm) stands out as the afternoon's feature, bringing together five quality performers over an extended two and a half miles. This looks the most competitive heat on the Ffos Las racecard.
Smugglers Haven and Queens Venture are locked together at the head of the weights on 115, but it's the Nicky Henderson-trained Fresh As A Daisy who catches the eye. Rated 110, she gets a handy 5lb pull with the top pair and has Paul O'Brien doing the steering. Henderson's runners at this venue have a habit of outrunning their odds, and this mare has been knocking on the door in similar company.
Miss Goldfire brings solid course and distance form to the table, which counts for plenty around here. Harry Fry's seven-year-old knows exactly what's required, though the handicapper has her measure at present.
Novices' Hurdle Sets the Tone
The opening KSR Lighting Novices' Hurdle (2:00pm) should provide some early pointers for the afternoon. Harry Cobden partnering Handmedownastar immediately draws the eye - when Cobden rocks up for a Class 4 novice hurdle, you sit up and take notice.
Flash Man brings the highest rating to the party at 112, and Toby Lawes has his string in good heart at present. The four-year-old represents the yard's jumping aspirations well, though this step up to nearly two and a half miles is uncharted territory.
Don't overlook Western George from the Jonjo O'Neill stable. The father and son team know how to place a horse, and Richie McLernon takes the ride. That combination has struck gold before at this level.
Marathon Tests Stamina Reserves
The Southcoast Homecare Excellence in Care Handicap Hurdle (4:20pm) over three miles and a furlong will sort the stayers from the pretenders. Juggernaut heads the weights for Anthony Honeyball, but it's the Henderson representative again that appeals.
Lelantos may be a ten-year-old, but he's a ten-year-old trained by the master of Lambourn. The rating of 96 looks workable in this company, and the trip holds no terrors. Henderson's older horses often find a new lease of life in these competitive handicaps.
Jefe Triunfo brings Harry Cobden back into the equation. Chris Gordon's seven-year-old has been consistent without winning, but this looks his sort of test. The combination of trip and ground should suit perfectly.
Chase Opportunities for Summer Series Points
Both steeplechases carry ARC Summer Chase Series qualification points, adding extra spice to proceedings. The marathon chase (3:10pm) over three miles and a furlong looks wide open, with Jack's Jury heading the market for Barry Murphy.
Friends Don't Ask brings course and distance experience - never underestimate that combination. At eleven years old, Clare Ellam's veteran knows every trick in the book, and Brendan Powell's booking suggests connections fancy their chances.
The shorter chase (4:55pm) sees Majestic Moment attempting to follow up recent success. Dean Summersby's seven-year-old carries course and distance form, with Bryan Carver maintaining the partnership. That's a positive sign when the same jockey keeps the ride.
Best Bets and Ones to Watch
My strongest fancy of the afternoon is Fresh As A Daisy in the mares' hurdle. The Henderson factor combined with that handy weight allowance makes plenty of appeal at likely odds.
Handmedownastar in the opener gets the nod purely on Harry Cobden's presence. When the champion jockey's stable jockey turns up for this level of race, there's usually a reason.
For the longer-priced punters, keep an eye on Marc Goldstein's mounts throughout the afternoon. The conditional jockey is riding with confidence and could pick up a spare ride or two at rewarding odds.
The ground shouldn't inconvenience any of these selections, and with competitive fields throughout, there should be plenty of pace to aim at. It's shaping up as a proper Sunday afternoon's entertainment in Carmarthenshire.
