A Proper Summer Saturday at Ludlow

There are quieter ways to spend a July Saturday, but not many better ones if you love jump racing. Ludlow puts on a genuinely competitive seven-race card today, headlined by the £75,000 Betway Summer Plate — one of the most valuable prizes in summer jumping. The ground is riding Good, which is about as fair as it gets at this track in mid-July. No excuses for connections, and no hiding place for horses that need cut in the ground.

Good ground here suits a particular type: athletic, fluent jumpers who travel well through a race rather than grinding it out. Ludlow's undulating 2m 5f chase course can catch horses out if they're not balanced, so jumping accuracy matters as much as raw ability. Keep that in mind as we work through the card. You can find the full Ludlow racecard on site.

The Feature Race: Betway Summer Plate Handicap Chase (14:45)

This is what we're all here for. Fourteen runners — now thirteen with In The Air a non-runner — line up over 2m 5f 89y in a race worth £75,000. Class 1 company, rated 119–143, and a field that would hold its own at plenty of Festival trials in the autumn. Don't let the July date fool you; this is a serious race.

Mahons Glory (rated 143) heads the weights and has to be the first name on the shortlist. The ten-year-old carries the top mark but crucially holds course and distance form — that [C,D] flag next to his name isn't decoration. Dylan Cunha's charge knows every inch of this track and on Good ground, where his jumping is at its most assured, he's hard to dismiss. Yes, he's ten, but age hasn't blunted him yet and Lee Edwards is a confident booking.

Soul Icon (rated 141) is the one most likely to give him a race. Harry Cobden takes the ride for Keiran Burke, and at 141 he's only 2lb below the top weight. Cobden doesn't take summer trips to Shropshire for the scenery — when he travels, he expects to be competitive. No course and distance form on the card, but his profile suggests he handles quick ground well enough.

Kingston Narcissus (rated 126) is the Dan Skelton runner to watch in this race. Harry Skelton takes the ride and the combination have been quietly lethal in summer handicaps over the past few seasons. Off a mark of 126, he's got weight on his side relative to the big two, and Skelton knows how to get a horse into a rhythm around here. Each-way claims are strong.

Nickelforce (rated 119) is the bottom weight with course and distance form — always a flag worth noting in a competitive handicap. Jack Quinlan rides for Ben Case, and at 119 he gets in relatively lightly. On a flat-track gallop this might not be enough, but Ludlow's contours can level the playing field.

Key Runners Across the Card

13:35 — Novices' Hurdle: Master Haku the class act

Gordon Elliott sends over Master Haku (rated 125) with Sean Bowen in the saddle. He's the highest-rated runner in this novices' hurdle by some margin and the combination of Elliott's form and Bowen's experience over 2m 4f on Good ground makes him the one to beat. Loriko (121) for the Skelton yard has course form [D] which is worth respecting — Dan Skelton doesn't run horses without a plan — but Master Haku looks a cut above at the ratings.

Harry Reed takes the mount on Nobotheratall for Tristan Davidson. Rated 110, he'll need the principals to underperform, but Reed is a capable handler of a big-field hurdle and Davidson's horses often run their race. One for the forecast if you're that way inclined.

14:10 — Summer Handicap Hurdle: Indemnity and Moon Chime share top billing

The £50,000 handicap hurdle over 2m 125y is a cracking contest. Indemnity and Moon Chime share top weight at 133 and both carry course and distance form — that [C,D] tag for both is significant over a trip where track knowledge genuinely matters. Emma Lavelle's Indemnity with Ben Jones up looks a solid each-way proposition. Moon Chime for the McPherson yard is equally respected.

Further down the weights, Squeezebox (rated 119, Tom Lacey) also holds [C,D] form and gets in 14lb below the top. Stan Sheppard rides and he's been in decent nick. At a big price, he could outrun his odds.

17:15 — Closing Handicap Hurdle: Value in the finale

The £20,000 closer over 2m 4f 139y has thirteen runners and a cluster of course form horses. Vivid Pink (rated 108) carries [C,D] credentials for Alan King, with Tom Bellamy booked — a pairing that doesn't need much encouragement. Ballygeary (rated 107) also has course and distance form for Mike Sowersby. In a wide-open race, both are worth including in any combination bets.

16:05 — Class 5 Chase: Catchim the one to side with

Catchim (rated 100) has course and distance form and Charlie Maggs... wait, no — Charlie Todd takes the ride here for the Pogson yard. Both Catchim and Dream Jet hold [C,D] form in this Class 5 chase. On Good ground over 2m 1f, the two course specialists should fight it out. Catchim's 1lb advantage at the top of the weights is marginal, but his course record gives him the nod.

How the Good Ground Shapes the Day

Good ground at Ludlow in July is a leveller. The track rides fairly through the summer when the going is like this — no premium on stamina, no reward for mud-lovers. What it does reward is clean jumping and an ability to travel. Horses that tend to idle in front or need driving along from some way out will find this ground unforgiving.

For the Summer Plate specifically, Good ground means the pace will be genuine from the off. Fourteen runners over 2m 5f on a fair surface — expect it to be run at a proper gallop. That suits hold-up horses who can produce a late run, and it arguably helps Kingston Narcissus, who tends to travel smoothly before producing his effort.

In the hurdle races, Good ground over the shorter trips (2m 125y) means the pace will be quick. Horses that handle fast conditions and jump fluently will have a natural advantage. Indemnity fits that profile well in the 14:10.

Best Bets Summary

  • Best Bet: Mahons Glory (14:45) — Top-rated, course and distance form, knows the track. Hardest to beat in the feature.

  • Confident Selection: Master Haku (13:35) — Sean Bowen, Gordon Elliott, top of the ratings. Should win a novice hurdle of this quality.
  • Each-Way Flier: Squeezebox (14:10) — Course and distance form, 14lb below top weight, Tom Lacey knows how to place a horse.
  • One to Watch: Vivid Pink (17:15) — Course and distance form, Tom Bellamy booked, Alan King doesn't waste a trip to Ludlow.
