A Proper Summer's Day at Headquarters

My old dad used to say there were two kinds of racing days — the ones you remember forever, and the ones that quietly remind you why you fell in love with the sport in the first place. A Friday afternoon at Newmarket in July, with the sun on your back and the Rowley Mile stretching out ahead of you, tends to fall into that second category. Nothing flashy. Just good, honest racing.

And that's exactly what we've got on the Newmarket racecard this Friday, 17th July. Six races across the afternoon, kicking off at 14:22 and wrapping up at 17:10. The going is reported as Good to Firm, Good in places — proper summer ground that will suit horses who travel well and stay balanced on a quick surface. If your selection likes soft ground and a bit of dig, today might not be your day. But for those with a turn of foot on a fast surface, conditions look ideal.

Let's take a walk through what's on offer.

The Feature Race: EBF Fillies' Novice Stakes (14:22)

With the card spread across a mix of Class 4, 5 and 6 contests, the British Stallion Studs EBF Fillies' Restricted Novice Stakes at 14:22 stands out as the race of the day — a mile and two and a half furlongs for three-year-old fillies, with £10,000 in prize money on the line.

Five runners go to post, and two names immediately catch the eye. Hauteluce, trained by Ed Walker and ridden by Ashley Lewis, carries a rating of 70 and represents a yard that knows how to place a horse. Walker has been in fine form this season and Hauteluce, on that mark, looks like she has the class to dictate terms over a trip that should suit a filly with a bit of stamina about her.

The other rated runner is Guesstimate from the William Haggas stable, also on 70, partnered by Harry Davies. Haggas and Newmarket go together like fish and chips — the man simply knows this track inside out. Davies has been riding with real confidence lately and this looks a lovely opportunity for the partnership.

The unrated trio — Celestial Cen (Archie Watson, Pierre-Louis Jamin), Sax Avoidance (Charlie Pike, Thomas Greatrex) and Sweet Horizon (Tom Clover, Jason Watson) — are unknown quantities on official figures, but that's part of the fun with novice races. Celestial Cen is worth a second look given Watson's booking on Sweet Horizon; Tom Clover doesn't waste a good jockey's time.

One to watch: Guesstimate. Haggas at home, Davies in the saddle, good to firm ground — it all adds up rather nicely.

Key Runners to Watch Across the Card

Regally Blonde — 15:27 Handicap (Course Winner)

The When You Wish Upon A Star Race Handicap at 15:27 is a proper stayers' test — two miles and one furlong and change — and in a field of five, the course winner stands out a mile. Regally Blonde, trained by Ben Case and ridden by Harry Davies, carries the [C] marker denoting a previous course winner. At seven years old and rated 51, she's the bottom of the handicap in terms of ratings, but course form at Newmarket over a distance like this is not to be dismissed lightly. She knows the track, she's clearly suited by it, and Davies knows how to nurse a stayer home.

The top-rated runner here is Al Sayah (rated 66, Neil Mulholland, Ashley Lewis) and on paper he's the class act, but at six years old on quick ground over marathon trips, you want a horse that's been here and done it. Keep an eye on Regally Blonde each-way.

Rinky Tinky Tinky — 16:40 Classified Stakes (Course Winner)

The PKF Wish Race Classified Stakes over five furlongs at 16:40 is a nine-runner sprint for three-year-olds and upwards, and it's as competitive as the field size suggests. But buried in the draw is Rinky Tinky Tinky, trained by Mrs Ilka Gansera-Leveque and ridden by Benoit de la Sayette, carrying the [C] marker for a course win. On a rating of 45 in a race where the top weight is only 50, this is a tight, compressed handicap — and course form over the minimum trip on fast ground could prove decisive. Five furlongs on good to firm rewards speed and efficiency. If Rinky Tinky Tinky has already shown she can do it here, that's a significant tick in the box.

Sir Benedict — 16:40 Classified Stakes (Course and Distance Winner)

While we're in the same race, it would be remiss not to mention Sir Benedict, who carries both the [C] and [D] markers — meaning he's won at the course and over this exact distance. At eight years old and rated 48, he's a veteran of the game, trained by Ben Haslam and ridden by Andrew Mullen. Horses like Sir Benedict don't win as often as they once did, but when conditions fall right — and good to firm over five furlongs at Newmarket is as right as it gets for him — they have a habit of reminding everyone they're still there.

How the Going Affects Today's Racing

Good to Firm, Good in places. That's the going description and it's worth taking seriously when you're making your selections today. On this kind of surface, you want horses that are fluent movers, ideally with a bit of class to carry them through the race rather than grinding it out. Heavy-topped, big-striding horses can find quick ground jarring — particularly over longer trips.

In the staying handicap (15:27), the good to firm conditions could actually expose Oceanides (rated just 34, Ed de Giles) as out of her depth, while suiting the more experienced Regally Blonde who has already shown she handles Newmarket. In the sprint races (16:40 and 16:02), the quick ground will put a premium on early pace and clean jumping out of the stalls. Horses drawn wide in big fields can sometimes get caught flat-footed — something worth bearing in mind in the eight-runner 16:02 contest.

For the fillies' novice opener, the mile and two furlongs on fast ground will sort out those with genuine stamina. Don't be surprised if the pace is modest early and it turns into a bit of a sprint finish — which, again, points you back towards Guesstimate and the Haggas/Davies combination.

Best Bets and Ones to Watch

Let's bring it all together. Here's where I'd be putting my money this Friday afternoon at Newmarket:

  • Guesstimate (14:22) — Top-rated, top trainer, top jockey. Good to firm suits. My best bet of the day.
  • Regally Blonde (15:27) — Course winner, knows the track, each-way value at her rating. Harry Davies the booking is a positive.
  • Sir Benedict (16:40) — Course and distance winner. Veteran know-how on a track and trip he clearly loves. Don't write him off.
  • Rinky Tinky Tinky (16:40) — Course form in a tight classified sprint. Worth a small each-way interest.
  • Hauteluce (14:22) — If Guesstimate doesn't take your fancy, Ashley Lewis and Ed Walker make a compelling alternative case.

It's a Friday afternoon, the sun is (hopefully) shining, and Newmarket is putting on a decent six-race card for us. You don't need to have a fortune on — a few well-reasoned bets, a flask of something warm if the Suffolk breeze picks up, and the simple pleasure of watching good horses run on beautiful ground. That's what it's all about, really. Enjoy the racing, and good luck to all of you punting today.
