There's something rather magical about evening racing at Southwell, isn't there? Reminds me of those summer evenings as a lad when my father would tune into the wireless commentary while pottering in the garden, the distant sound of hooves on the all-weather drifting through the open kitchen window. Thursday's card had that same sense of anticipation, though with considerably more class than we usually associate with midweek fare.
The Southwell racecard was headlined by the Cardinal Conditions Stakes, a proper Class 2 affair worth £30,000 that immediately caught the eye. When you see Ryan Moore making the trip north for an evening meeting, you know there's serious business afoot. His mount Yazin, rated 96, was the standout name on paper, though Golden View with William Buick aboard suggested this wasn't going to be a procession.
What struck me most about this card was the depth of quality throughout. Yes, we had the usual mix of Class 5 and 6 handicaps that form the bread and butter of evening racing, but the jockey bookings told their own story. When you've got the likes of Hollie Doyle, Jamie Spencer, and Robert Havlin all making the journey, you know the connections are taking these races seriously.
The Feature Attraction
The Cardinal Conditions Stakes at 16:57 was always going to be the evening's centrepiece, and on paper at least, it lived up to its billing. Yazin's presence immediately elevated the contest – any horse good enough to warrant Ryan Moore's services on a Thursday evening at Southwell deserves serious respect. The fact that this gelding carries a mark of 96 suggests we're dealing with a horse who's been mixing it in far loftier company.
Golden View presented the most obvious threat, with William Buick's booking catching the eye immediately. Buick doesn't often venture to the provinces for evening meetings unless there's a genuine chance of success, and his presence here suggested Golden View was primed for a big effort. The unrated status of both Golden View and Intense Vision added an element of intrigue – sometimes these lightly-raced types can spring surprises when stepping up in class.
Intense Vision with Jonny Peate was perhaps the wild card of the trio. Peate's a capable jockey who knows his way around Southwell's unique surface, and an unrated horse in a conditions race can often outrun their odds if the handicapper hasn't quite got their measure yet.
Ones to Follow
Looking beyond the feature, several horses caught my notebook for future reference. In the 18:30 handicap, Marnier looked particularly interesting. Robert Havlin's booking for a horse rated 86 in a Class 4 contest suggests the handicapper might have been a touch generous, and Havlin's record at Southwell is nothing if not consistent.
New York Minute in the same race also merits a second look. Hector Crouch has been riding with real confidence lately, and a mark of 85 might just underestimate this one's current ability. The step up to a mile and three furlongs could unlock further improvement – always worth noting when a horse moves to a more suitable trip.
Down in the Class 6 ranks, Aneirin's Sword caught my eye in the 19:00 contest. Saffie Osborne's booking immediately elevated this one above the ordinary, and a mark of 65 looks workable for a horse with Osborne's backing. She's developed quite an eye for placing her rides to maximum advantage, and this looked like another shrewd booking.
The novice stakes at 19:30 was absolutely stuffed with potential. Ten runners including several unrated types made this a proper puzzle, but Ice To Meet You with Rob Hornby looked the most professional option. Hornby's been in cracking form lately, and his presence here suggested this newcomer had been showing the right signs at home.
Jockey Watch
The jockey bookings throughout the card were genuinely impressive for a Thursday evening. Hollie Doyle had three rides, including Life After Love in the 17:30 sprint and Bomb Squad in the 20:00 handicap. When Doyle takes multiple rides at an evening meeting, it's usually worth paying attention – she wouldn't make the trip unless she fancied her chances on at least one of them.
Jamie Spencer's presence on both Vaguely Royal and Lady Ridgewood suggested these were live contenders in their respective contests. Spencer's tactical nous around Southwell's tight turns has served him well over the years, and both his mounts looked reasonably treated by the handicapper.
Robert Havlin's treble of rides – Marnier, Ay Up Duck, and Searchingtheblues – painted a picture of a jockey expecting a profitable evening. Havlin knows Southwell like the back of his hand, and his strike rate here over the past few seasons has been notably impressive.
Looking Ahead
The beauty of a card like this is that it often throws up improvers who'll be worth following in the coming weeks. The Cardinal Conditions Stakes winner, whoever that proves to be, will likely be aimed at similar Class 2 contests through the summer. Pattern race connections don't usually venture to Southwell unless they're plotting a specific campaign.
Several of the handicappers looked primed for quick follow-ups. The all-weather season is entering its final phase before the turf takes centre stage, so any horse showing improved form now will likely be targeted at the remaining Fibresand features before connections switch their attention to grass.
The novice contest winners will be ones to note for future reference. Southwell's novice races often produce horses who go on to better things, particularly those who win with authority first time out. The all-weather experience gained here can prove invaluable when these horses eventually tackle turf assignments.
All in all, Thursday's card represented everything that's good about evening racing – competitive fields, quality jockey bookings, and enough intrigue to keep the most discerning punter entertained. Not bad for a Thursday night in Nottinghamshire, and certainly worth the price of admission for anyone who made the trip to the track.
