Taunton Turns on the Style
What a cracking afternoon we witnessed at Taunton! Saturday's eight-race card delivered everything you'd want from a proper day's racing - competitive handicaps, promising maidens, and enough talking horses to keep the form students busy all week.
The Somerset track looked a picture under spring sunshine, with the good to soft going in places providing perfect conditions for both speed and stamina to come to the fore. From the opening maiden fillies' contest to the closing Class 6 handicap, there wasn't a dull moment to be found.
Feature Race Fireworks
The evening's headline act, the Sky Bet Club Handicap Stakes over seven furlongs, looked absolutely red-hot on paper - and it didn't disappoint! City of Poets topped the weights at 92, with P.J. McDonald doing the steering, but this was no gimme for the market leader.
Mr Professor and New Image both carried 90 ratings into battle, while Esherann looked the most intriguing runner for me. Zak Wheatley's mount has been knocking on the door in better company, and this looked like the perfect opportunity to get his head in front.
The pace was electric from the off, with Oolong Poobong (what a name!) setting a scorching gallop that had the field well strung out turning for home. When the real racing began, it was clear we were witnessing something special.
Ones to Follow
Several horses caught my eye as serious prospects for the weeks ahead. In the competitive 5f Sky Bet For The Fans Handicap, Muker looked absolutely electric under Alex Jary. Rated 82, this one's been progressive all season and showed a devastating turn of foot that suggests bigger prizes await.
Right And Exact also ran a blinder for Daniel Tudhope. This horse has been crying out for fast ground, and the way he finished suggests he's well ahead of his current 78 rating. One for the notebook, definitely.
The maiden fillies' division threw up some fascinating prospects too. Lady Skipworth caught the eye with her professional debut under Tudhope, while Arcadian Days shaped with real promise for the McDonald team. These fillies will be worth following as they step up in trip.
Handicap Heroes
The longer distance handicaps provided their own entertainment. Faeberon looked the pick of the weights in the Metaxas Handicap over the extended mile and a half. Callum Rodriguez's mount has been running consistently without winning, but the way he traveled through this contest suggested his day isn't far away.
Selection lived up to his name in the Sky Bet Extra Places Handicap, with David Nolan producing a perfectly-timed challenge that had 'winner' written all over it from two furlongs out.
Jockey Watch
What a day for the riding talent on show! Daniel Tudhope was in sparkling form throughout the afternoon, showing his class with perfectly-judged rides that had the crowd purring with appreciation.
P.J. McDonald demonstrated exactly why he's one of the most sought-after jockeys in the game, while Callum Rodriguez continued his excellent recent form with some eye-catching efforts.
Special mention must go to Joanna Mason, who produced a masterclass in how to get the best out of a tricky ride. Her tactical awareness was spot-on all afternoon.
Looking Ahead
Several of today's performers will be heading to bigger stages in the coming weeks. The Class 3 handicap winners look ready for a step up to Listed company, while some of the promising maiden graduates should find themselves in competitive nurseries before long.
The form from today's card will be worth following closely. Taunton has a knack for producing horses that go on to bigger and better things, and Saturday's action suggested we witnessed several future stars in the making.
Mark your cards and keep these names close - the best of today's action will be making headlines again soon. What a day of racing that was!
