A Classic Trial With Real Depth
The Nell Gwyn Stakes has carved out a nice niche as a stepping stone to the 1000 Guineas, and this year's renewal at Newbury looks particularly strong. Thirteen fillies have stood their ground for Wednesday's Group 3, with several carrying serious Classic credentials.
What strikes me about this field is the quality throughout. We've got Godolphin and Ballydoyle represented at the top end, while trainers like the Gosdens and Hugo Palmer have smart types lurking. The even weights format means it comes down to raw ability and current form – exactly what you want to see.
The seven-furlong trip suits most here, though some will be eyeing this as a prep for longer distances later in the season. Good ground should play to the speedier types, and with thirteen runners, positioning from the gates could prove crucial.
The Market Leaders
Beautify heads the betting for Aidan O'Brien, and you can see why. The daughter of No Nay Never carries a hefty 112 rating – the highest in the field – and has Ryan Moore in the saddle. That combination alone demands respect. O'Brien's filly has shown plenty of pace in her work at Ballydoyle, and the Coolmore team wouldn't be here unless they fancied their chances.
Draw eight isn't ideal with this field size, but Moore has the tactical nous to overcome that. My only slight concern is whether she's been over-raced as a juvenile. O'Brien can sometimes be quite hard on his better fillies early on.
America Queen brings solid credentials for Richard Hughes. Her 108 rating puts her right in the mix, and Rossa Ryan has struck up a good partnership with the Hughes yard this season. She's been working nicely at home, and the step up to Group company looks well within her compass.
The daughter of American Pharoah has that touch of class in her pedigree, and Hughes has been patient with her development. Draw six gives Ryan options, and I suspect she'll be thereabouts when it matters.
The Godolphin Factor
Act of Kindness represents Charlie Appleby's battalion, with William Buick taking the ride. What catches the eye immediately is her course and distance form – always a plus at Newbury where local knowledge counts.
Appleby's fillies tend to improve significantly from two to three, and the Dubawi bloodline suggests she'll relish today's conditions. Draw two could be a real advantage if Buick can get her away smartly and dictate from the front rank.
The Gosden team wheel out Asmeralda, another with distance-winning form to her name. Oisin Murphy gets the leg-up, and that's rarely a bad sign when the Clarehaven team mean business. She's been working with purpose on the Newmarket gallops, and the Gosdens know how to get a filly ready for a big day.
Value Angles and Dark Horses
At bigger odds, Inis Mor for David Menuisier catches my attention. She's both course and distance winner, which counts for plenty, and Sean Levey knows her well. Menuisier's string are in good heart, and at around 12/1, she offers each-way value.
Mubasimah is another with the course and distance form in the book. Andrew Balding's filly has been working nicely, and Rob Hornby is a jockey in form. The 102 rating suggests she's competitive at this level.
Don't completely dismiss Fitzella either. Hugo Palmer's filly has been crying out for this step up in trip, and James Doyle rarely gets aboard Palmer's runners without good reason. Her 105 rating puts her in the hunt.
The Verdict
This shapes up as a proper contest, but I'm drawn to America Queen as the value play. Her rating of 108 puts her right there with the market leaders, yet she's likely to be bigger odds than both Beautify and Act of Kindness.
Hughes has done a fine job with her development, and Ryan is riding with real confidence. The American Pharoah bloodline suggests she's bred for this level, and the patient approach taken with her conditioning looks set to pay dividends.
Beautify sets a clear standard and will take plenty of beating, but at the likely odds, America Queen offers better value for what should be a cracking renewal of this Classic trial.
Who is the favourite for the Nell Gwyn Stakes?
Beautify, trained by Aidan O'Brien and ridden by Ryan Moore, heads the betting. Her rating of 112 is the highest in the field, and the Ballydoyle team's presence suggests they fancy their chances of adding another Group race to their tally.
Which fillies have course and distance form?
Three runners boast both course and distance winning form: Act of Kindness (Charlie Appleby), Inis Mor (David Menuisier), and Mubasimah (Andrew Balding). This local knowledge could prove crucial in a competitive field, particularly given Newbury's unique characteristics.
What are the Classic implications of this race?
The Nell Gwyn Stakes serves as a key trial for the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket in early May. Several connections will use this as a final prep race, with the winner likely to be supplemented for the first fillies' Classic if not already entered. The seven-furlong distance provides an ideal stepping stone to the Guineas mile.
