A Proper Friday Treat at Berkshire's Finest
There's something rather special about a Friday afternoon at Newbury, isn't there? Reminds me of those school holidays when Dad would bundle us into the Morris Marina and head down to Berkshire for what he called "a proper day's racing." Today's Newbury racecard had that same feel-good factor – eight races of genuine quality that reminded you why this track remains one of Britain's premier venues.
The going was riding beautifully on Good, Good to Firm in places, and with Oisin Murphy seemingly on everything that moved, you knew we were in for a treat. Sometimes these Friday cards can feel a bit workmanlike, but this one had genuine class stamped all over it, from the opening EBF Novice Stakes right through to the evening finale.
The Feature Race: Juddmonte EBF Restricted Novice Stakes
The £30,000 Juddmonte EBF Restricted Novice Stakes over six furlongs was always going to be the day's centrepiece, and what a field they assembled. Fourteen runners, all unrated but clearly thought plenty of by connections – you don't rock up to a Class 2 contest at Newbury with the also-rans.
O'Gorman caught the eye in the market, and with Oisin Murphy taking the ride, you had to sit up and take notice. But it was the presence of Agitator with Edward Greatrex in the saddle that really got the juices flowing. Any horse good enough to warrant Greatrex getting his hands dirty in the irons usually has a bit about them, and the way this one was moving in the preliminaries suggested we might be looking at something special.
Mirzimaan and Regal Chita also looked the part in the paddock, while Saffie Osborne's mount Celtic Charioteer had that lovely, relaxed demeanour that often translates to ability on the track. With this being an EBF Restricted Race Qualifier, whoever came out on top would be firmly on the radar for bigger things.
Handicap Highlights and Talking Horses
The Boodles Handicap over a mile and four furlongs threw up some fascinating angles. Master Vintner, Pride of Donegal, and Topteam all arrived off identical marks of 90, which always makes for compelling viewing. When the handicapper rates three horses identically, you know you're in for a proper battle.
But it was Asgard's Captain on 89 who really took my fancy. Luke Morris rarely gets the plum rides unless there's genuine ability lurking, and this one has been knocking on the door in some decent company. The step up to a mile and a half looked ideal on breeding, and with the [C,D] notation suggesting previous course form, this felt like a horse ready to strike.
Down in the Class 5 ranks, the Turner's Fillies' Handicap served up thirteen runners with Crazee Icon looking potentially well-treated off 70. Oisin Murphy's presence again caught the attention, and any filly good enough to warrant the champion jockey's services in a modest contest usually has more to offer than the handicapper suspects.
Jockey Watch and Stable Pointers
Speaking of Murphy, the man was absolutely everywhere today – seven rides across the card, which tells you everything about the quality on offer. When the retained jockey for Qatar Racing is picking up that many spares at a Friday meeting, you know trainers are sending their good ones.
Edward Greatrex was another name that kept cropping up, taking rides in four races including that feature contest. Greatrex doesn't travel light, and when he's making the effort to get to Newbury on a Friday, it's usually worth paying attention.
Saffie Osborne continues to impress with her booking policy – five rides on the day suggests she's becoming the go-to jockey for trainers with progressive types. Her mount Magic Box in the Behind the Bridle Racehorse Aftercare Handicap looked particularly interesting, a lightly-raced sort off 76 who could easily be ahead of the handicapper.
Ones to Follow and Future Engagements
Several horses emerged from today's action firmly in the notebook for future reference. Tales of Wisdom in the opening mile novice event carries a rating of 95, suggesting previous ability, and with Dougie Costello doing the steering, looked ready to translate that promise into prize money.
From the feature race, whoever finished in the first three or four home will be worth following through the summer. These EBF contests often produce the stars of tomorrow, and with Royal Ascot just around the corner, today's performance could well be the launching pad for bigger things.
We're Goosers in the evening's Class 4 contest over seven furlongs looked another to keep on side. Rated 84 and with Murphy again in the saddle, this felt like a horse ready to step forward from previous efforts.
Looking Ahead: Summer Targets Beckon
What made today's card so compelling was the sense that we were watching horses at the start of their campaigns rather than the end. The novice events in particular had that lovely early-season feel where anything could happen, and several of today's runners will surely be turning up at the summer festivals.
The handicappers too looked to be running into form rather than off it, which bodes well for the weeks ahead. There's nothing quite like a Friday at Newbury to set you up for the weekend, and today's card delivered in spades. Whether you were there soaking up the Berkshire sunshine or following from the comfort of your local, this was racing as it should be – competitive, fair, and full of promise for the future.
