Friday sees the 2025 edition of the Dante Festival reach its third and final day, as the Knavesmire venue lays on another cracking seven-race card. Where the speedballs take centre stage on Day 1 and the Derby hopefuls light up Day 2, Day three belongs to the stayers.
The staying division may not produce the same hype as the Classic generation, but in many ways, it is the most compelling of all. Whereas the leading three-year-olds often quickly disappear into the breeding jungle, the star stayers return year after year, creating an attachment with punters that is hard to match.
First run in 1927, the Yorkshire Cup is the first significant event for the stayers on the British racing calendar, and regularly attracts runners who go on to contest the Goodwood Cup, Lonsdale Cup, Ascot Gold Cup, Doncaster Cup, and Long Distance Cup.
A scroll through the roll of honour of this £192,200 event reveals the names of a plethora of staying sensations, including Ardross, Classic Cliché, Kayf Tara, and three-time champ Stradivarius.
Stamina and class feature high on the wish list when seeking the potential winner, but what else should we look for? Here, we look back at the ten editions between 2014 and 2024 (no race in 2020), highlight the standout stats and trends, and pick out our best trends-based bet for 2025.
Fate of the Favourite
The market leader boasts a rock-solid recent record in this event, with five of the ten editions in our sample falling to the favourite. A £1 level stakes punt on the jolly over this period returned a profit of £4.22. Nine of the ten winners returned a single figure SP, with Giavellotto the odd horse out, having bagged the first of his two wins at 14/1 in 2023.
Younger Runners Hold The Edge
The three-year-old Kingstone (1945) stands alone as the youngest Yorkshire Cup winner, but the race is currently restricted to runners four and older. At the other end of the spectrum, Sergeant Cecil, Clever Cookie, and Stradivarius scored at eight years of age.
Relative youth was favoured in the ten editions in our sample, with eight winners being either four or five.
110+ Rating Required
The brilliant Stradivarius topped our ratings table, having arrived with a mark of 121 for the second of his record-setting three wins. 2021 champ Spanish Mission brought up the rear with a rating of 110. The average rating of the winner over the sample was 115.1. With all ten winners rated at least 110, we will use this as our next key stat.
Group 1 Experience an Advantage
With stayers tending to have longer careers than sprinters and middle-distance horses, and often following the same programme year after year, it makes sense that many winners would have lined up at least once in Group 1 company. Eight of the ten winners in our sample ticked that box.
Stamina Considerations
At 1m6f, the Yorkshire Cup isn’t the most demanding of the “Cup” events – particularly compared to the 2m4f of the Ascot Gold Cup. However, most winners had previously scored over (or just short of) this distance, with eight of the ten in our sample boasting a win at 1m5½f or further.
Up To This Class
Whilst most winners had tried their hand in Group 1 company, those efforts produced varying results, with only three of eight winning at the top level. However, seven of the ten winners had at least one success at Group 2 level or above.
Betting Recommendations: Continuous Tough to Catch
Rebel’s Romance heads the market but is only a moderate trend fit. His lack of a win in a staying event, in particular, is a potential negative.
Sweet William appeals most of those towards the head of the market, having won four times at 1m6f and finished a close second in the Ebor on his only previous visit to this track.
The Gosden runner is hard to fault, but just one horse gains maximum points. As such, the Aidan O’Brien-trained Continuous will carry our cash here. The 2023 St. Leger winner has been deemed classy enough to line up in the last two editions of the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and has fitness on his side following recent outings at Meydan and Riyadh.
