Folkestone on a Tuesday afternoon in early September isn't exactly Cheltenham in March — and believe me, nobody knows that better than your man here — but credit where it's due: today's Folkestone racecard was a genuinely interesting piece of work. Seven races, Good ground (Going Stick reading 37, so on the quicker side of Good), and a roll call of jockeys that would have you rubbing your eyes. Ryan Moore, William Buick, Oisin Murphy and Cieren Fallon all on the same card at a Kent gaff on a Tuesday? Someone's been busy on the phone. The ground was fair — quick enough to flatter the speedier types in the sprints but not the kind of rattling fast that makes the stayers' race a lottery. For a 2m feature, that matters enormously, and we'll get to that in a moment. First, let's take in the full picture.

The Feature Race: Peter Willett Future Stayers' Maiden (14:05)

If you're a jumps man like me, the words Future Stayers' make your ears prick up like an old hound catching a scent. This is the race on the card that genuinely excites me. A Class 2 maiden over a mile, sire and dam restricted, specifically designed to identify the staying types of tomorrow — and with a prize fund of £30,000, connections aren't messing about.

The name that jumps out immediately is Noble Traveller, partnered by Ryan Moore. Now listen — Moore doesn't schlep down to Folkestone on a Tuesday for the fresh air and the view of the English Channel. When the Champion Jockey's retained rider is on a debutant or lightly raced maiden in a race specifically targeting future stayers, you pay attention. That's not opinion, that's just good sense.

Royal Acclamation under William Buick is the other one I'd be watching with a hawk's eye. Buick and Charlie Appleby — or whichever Godolphin string this comes from — tend to know exactly what they have, and a mile in a stayers' maiden is a very deliberate entry. If Royal Acclamation travels well through the race and wins with any authority, mark the name down in big letters.

Quicken Away with Oisin Murphy aboard completes what is effectively a top-three of jockey power in this race, and Murphy wouldn't be here without reason either. The market will tell its own story, but whichever of these three wins — or even runs a cracking second — could be lining up in something considerably more prestigious before the season's out.

The 2m Handicap: Manxman and the Stayers' Showdown (15:50)

Here's where the jumps man in me really sits up straight. A Class 2 handicap over two miles at Folkestone in September, worth £25,000 — this is a proper staying test and the kind of race that can tell you a lot about horses with a future over obstacles. Not saying any of these will go jumping, mind you, but the profile of a horse who stays two miles on the Flat in good style is one that makes National Hunt trainers reach for their cheque books come the autumn sales.

Manxman (William Buick, rated 93) is the top-rated runner and carries the burden of favouritism with what looks like a fair chance. He's course and distance proven — that [C,D] flag is not to be sniffed at over two miles, where every yard of track knowledge counts. Buick's presence underlines the confidence.

Bahadur (Cieren Fallon, rated 91) is also course and distance qualified and represents the main danger. Fallon junior has been in fine nick and if Bahadur travels smoothly through what should be a genuinely run two miles, he's well capable of turning the tables on the favourite.

Keep an eye on Fireblade (Saffie Osborne, rated 87) — a course specialist dropping into a race where the pace might suit a hold-up performer. Osborne has been riding with real confidence lately and if this one gets first run on the home turn, don't be surprised to see it involved at the business end.

Ones to Follow From the Rest of the Card

The Royal Sussex Regiment Fillies' Conditions Stakes (14:40) over 7f is a proper little puzzle. Sorrengail (William Buick, rated 89) is the highest-rated filly in the field and has to be respected — Buick doesn't ride 89-rated fillies in conditions races to finish fourth. But the one that genuinely intrigues me is Al Samsama under Ryan Moore, unrated and therefore a bit of a dark horse. Two top-drawer jockeys on unrated or lightly exposed fillies in a conditions race? One of them knows something. My gut says Moore's booking is the more significant.

In the 5f sprint handicap (15:15), Nogo's Dream (Ryan Moore, rated 73) is the obvious talking point — Moore on a 73-rated sprinter is a combination that raises eyebrows, and rightly so. If this horse has been freshened up and the handicapper has been kind, a big run is entirely possible. Over Spiced with Oisin Murphy (rated 67) is another who looks potentially well-treated if in good heart.

The 6f handicap (17:00) to close the day looks competitive on paper. Mister Bluebird (Cieren Fallon, rated 84) and Old Is Gold (Oisin Murphy, rated 83) are the ones I'd be keeping tabs on — both capable of winning this grade and potentially stepping up in class if they do so with any style.

Let's be honest — the story of today's card at Folkestone is as much about the jockeys as the horses. Moore, Buick, Murphy and Fallon all present on a Tuesday provincial card suggests there are horses here that connections believe in. You don't send your stable jockey to Kent in September to make up the numbers. Each of those bookings is a statement of intent, and the shrewd punter pays as much attention to who's riding as what's running.

Saffie Osborne deserves a mention too — she's been quietly excellent this season and her rides on Fireblade (15:50) and Born Slippy (17:00) suggest she's in demand for good reason. Don't overlook her.

Final Thoughts: Folkestone Delivers a Proper Tuesday

Look, I'm a jumps man at heart — give me Cheltenham in November over any Flat card you like. But I'll give credit where it's due: today's card at Folkestone had genuine quality woven through it. The Peter Willett Future Stayers' Maiden alone was worth the price of admission, and the 2m handicap gave the stayers' enthusiast plenty to chew on.
